Every Wednesday, we bring you the most important and amusing news stories of the past week. This week: Republicans finally break through on healthcare.
- Indelegate is your friend. Make it official on Facebook and Twitter.
- What are the limits of the President’s power to pardon? Could he even pardon himself? It’s a question some people are asking… including, apparently, the President himself. Huh, how about that.
- Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has aggressive brain cancer. He might have a year or so to live.
- Less than a week after the surgery that revealed his cancer, McCain was back in the Senate yesterday to cast a critical vote on a procedural step in repealing ACA.
- Thanks to McCain and others, the Senate can now debate the proposed ACA repeal. But they’ll still have to agree on a bill and pass it.
- After his vote, McCain lectured his fellow senators. He said explicitly that he would not vote for the bill as-is (again, yesterday’s vote was a procedural step allowing for debate – not the final vote on the bill).
- President Donald Trump has announced a new ban on transgender individuals in the military.
- Yeah, heavy stuff this week. Take a meme break.
- Trump has been shit-talking Jeff Sessions all week long, but has not yet fired the guy. If Trump does fire Sessions, there would still be some distance between him and Robert Mueller’s Russia probe in the form of deputy attorney general (and would-be acting AG) Rod Rosenstein, who is already in charge of the investigation thanks to Sessions’ recusal.
- Farewell, Sean Spicer. Hello, Anthony Scaramucci.
- Jared Kushner revised his financial disclosures because he’d left more than 77 assets off of his last version. And he still isn’t including loans of at least $1 billion, per The Wall Street Journal. Not a great look!
- In a related story, Kushner made a public appearance to deny colluding with Russia. What a week for the guy.
- President Donald Trump spoke at the National Boy Scout Jamboree, in keeping with national and Scouting tradition. Trump’s speech was a sleazy mess, in keeping with his own personal tradition.
- If this makes you mad, I would like to humbly propose that you be mad at Trump, rather than at 40,000 children.
- Here’s some good shit: Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) was caught on a hot mic speaking to Senator Jack Reed (D-RI). Reed called Trump “crazy.” Collins did not defend Trump and said she was “worried.” She also called a Texas senator “huge” and “unattractive.” This was the same Texas senator who wanted to duel her, by the way.
- I missed Trump’s lawyer getting mad online the other week, but I rectified that with some coverage this week.
- Energy secretary Rick Perry thought he spoke to Ukraine’s Prime Minister for 22 minutes. It was actually a couple of Russian pranksters. Yes, really.
